You don't need a mechanic to spot 80% of used-car problems. You need ten minutes, a flashlight and the patience to ignore the sales pitch. We timed this checklist across 30 real Kenyan used-car visits last year and refined it to what actually catches things.
Start outside the car before you even say hello. Walk a slow circle, crouch at each wheel arch, and look at the gap between panels. If the gap widens from front to back on one side, the car has been pushed in an accident and re-welded. This takes 20 seconds and eliminates half the shady listings.
Next, open every door with the key not the fob. Feel for drag on the hinges. Cars that have been lived in for years have a characteristic tired swing to the doors. Cars with replaced doors have a crisper snap that doesn't match the rest of the vehicle.
Now the dashboard. Start the car, turn the ignition off — before it fully fires — and note which bulbs light up for exactly three seconds. Missing SRS or ABS warning bulbs is the oldest trick in Mombasa imports. If you see the cluster lights up different colour temperatures on different warnings, somebody has swapped a cluster to hide mileage.
Drive at last. Fifteen minutes minimum, and always with the A/C at maximum. A half-dead compressor announces itself under load within four minutes. Tap the brake at speed twice hard; a pulling car has warped disks, a 'wobbling' pedal has warped rotors. Try second gear at 40 km/h in an auto — anything that shudders there has a transmission overhaul in its future.
Finally, the paperwork. NTSA record on your phone before you leave: the chassis number, engine number and first owner date must match the physical car within 30 seconds. If it doesn't, walk.
Fifteen deliberate minutes in daylight will save you six weeks of mechanic appointments.
